How to Use Link Intersection for Backlink Prospects That Fit Your Business

For a growing business, a strong backlink profile is not simply a long list of websites that mention competitors. It is evidence that relevant publishers, industry groups and customers see a reason to refer people to your work. To use link intersection for backlink prospects effectively, look for sources linking to several of your competitors, then assess whether your business can offer those sources something genuinely useful.

This approach can be especially valuable for smaller companies in crowded fields such as fashion, technology and retail. Instead of contacting hundreds of sites with a generic pitch, you can begin with a focused set of organisations already covering your market. The overlap is a research signal, not a guarantee that a link is available or worthwhile.

Start with competitors that make sense

Choose a few businesses that compete for the same customers and search terms. They do not need to be identical in size, but their audiences and products should be reasonably close to yours. A local clothing label, for example, might compare itself with other independent brands and a specialist fashion retailer, rather than a global marketplace with a completely different publishing footprint.

It is useful to include both direct competitors and businesses that compete for attention. A software company might examine similar products alongside a respected industry publication or a consultancy that publishes guides for the same buyers. Keep these groups separate in your notes: a backlink opportunity from a trade association may have a different purpose from a product review or a supplier directory.

Find the overlap, then investigate it

SEO tools can compare competitor backlink profiles and show domains that link to more than one of the sites you entered. This is the basic principle behind link intersection. For a practical walkthrough of the research process, see this competitor backlink analysis guide.

Export or record the overlapping domains, then inspect the pages themselves. A domain-level metric alone cannot tell you whether a link is editorial, relevant or still live. Ask what the linking page is about, who it serves, and why it links to those businesses. The answer often reveals the right next step: a useful resource, a product comparison, a local partnership, a professional profile or a news story.

Look for the context around each link. If several competitors are listed in a buyer’s guide, the publisher may accept additional products that meet its criteria. If links appear in event sponsor pages, the opportunity may depend on genuine participation rather than a cold email. If they come from a copied directory, the overlap may have little value. A prospect is worth pursuing only when the source is credible and the link would help a reader.

    Prioritise by relevance and effort

Before outreach, sort opportunities into a few categories: high-fit editorial coverage, partnerships or organisations, useful directories, and low-priority or suspicious sources. Consider the page’s audience, its topical connection to your business, the quality of its content and whether it appears maintained. A small specialist publication can be more valuable than a large site whose audience has no reason to care about your offer.

Then decide what you can contribute. A fashion brand might offer original information about material sourcing or a clear guide to garment care. A technology firm could share test results, explain a complex issue or provide a knowledgeable expert for an interview. Businesses with a physical presence might support a local event or contribute a useful resource to a community organisation. The point is to earn a mention by making the page better, not to ask for a link in isolation.

    Make outreach specific

A concise message should identify the page, explain why your contribution suits its readers and give the recipient an easy way to assess it. Avoid claiming that a competitor’s link entitles you to one too. Editors make their own decisions, and a copied pitch can damage trust. If a page is outdated, describe the correction or new information you can supply; if it is a roundup, explain plainly how your product meets its stated standards.

Offline contacts can also become online relationships. A conversation at a trade event may lead to a joint project, an interview or a useful resource on an organisation’s site. For those events, getting the practical details right matters: if you are deciding what size is a business card, Osdire’s guide compares international dimensions and print considerations. Osdire is also a freelance marketplace, so a business without in-house design or writing support can find independent help across creative and marketing categories.

Track outcomes, not just acquired links

Record each prospect, the referring page, the reason it qualifies, your outreach date and any response. Revisit live links periodically, but judge the campaign by more than link count. Relevant referral visits, useful industry relationships and improved visibility for the pages you want customers to find are stronger signs of progress than a spreadsheet full of low-value domains.

Link intersection works best as a disciplined discovery method. It narrows the field to sites that already recognise businesses in your market, while your own evaluation determines whether they deserve attention. Combine overlap data with real research and a credible contribution, and competitor links become a source of ideas rather than a checklist to copy.
